Pushing Boundaries This Halloween
“Halloween is the one time of the year where you can truly be creative and step out of your comfort zone to be something other than yourself,” said Rikki-Lee Thomas, from Lunatic Fringe South Temple.
Rikki-Lee specializes in special effects (SFX) makeup and goes above and beyond with a few guests every year to enhance their costume with a full face of artful paint, glitter, latex and sometimes prosthetics.
When asked why she enjoys SFX makeup she said: “It allows me to step away from the ‘glam’ side of the makeup industry and add my own quirky and sometimes spooky twist to it!”
Rikki-Lee recommends surfing Pinterest, going to thrift stores and bouncing ideas off of friends when developing your Halloween alter-ego.
Kylee Munster, stylist at Lunatic Fringe Parleys Way and fellow Halloween lover, says that she gets a lot of her inspiration from Hollywood and fairytales. “I love being inspired by things I’ve just seen in a movie or read about in a story. It’s fun to bring things to life, whether that’s a magnificent mermaid or a gory bloody monster.”
Like Rikki-Lee, Kylee is also passionate about costume and SFX makeup. “I love doing costume and SFX makeup because it really brings the costume to life. Well-done makeup can make or break a costume, depending on what you’re dressed as. There’s so much detail, it’s so fun!”
“Halloween is great because costumes can be anything from spooky, to silly, to glamorous, or mix it all together. There really aren’t any rules. Be anything you feel. Bring out your fears, your inspirations, your fantasies. I love Halloween because it gives the opportunity to be as creative, weird and unique as you want. Push boundaries and get artistic.” Kylee encourages.
Kylee’s number one tip for creating your costume is to remember that you don’t have to break the bank to have a killer costume. “Get creative, think outside the box, and put things together on your own. You don’t always have to do things exact, you can put your own spin on things and make it your own!”
We believe creative expression is important year-round. However, it’s undeniable that there is a special freedom we all experience around Halloween when we have full permission to adorn any look we can bring to life.
From all of us here at Lunatic Fringe—be anything and everything you want this Halloween. we support you. We get it.
